1 Day / SOFIA - VELIKO TARNOVO - SOFIA
We highly recommend this tour to Veliko Tarnovo as this town is very different from the other ones in Bulgaria and hides some specific magic, charm and glamour to which you have to be touched. Often referred to as the "City of the Tsars", Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famously known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture.
As the way to Veliko Tarnovo is long enough – 3 hours one way, the tour starts at 08:30 o’clock behind St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral. The approximate time of arrival in Veliko Tarnovo is 11:30 o’clock. The first place you will visit in this tour is the medieval stronghold named Tsaravets Fortress – is surrounded with 3,000 feet of stone walls, some of which have a thickness of over 11 feet and height of 36 feet. After our guided stroll through the fortress we’ll take a break for lunch – there are so many restaurants in Veliko Tarnovo where you can taste delicious meals enjoying the beautiful city view. One of the restaurants we recommend is “Stastlivetsa”.
Then we will make a walk in the Old Town and especially Samovodskata Charshia where during the second half of the 19th century, this was the place where the farmers from the nearby village of Samovodene came on market days to sell their goods. We’ll see together also The Assens Monument where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the old town.
Keep in mind that to see Veliko Tarnovo requires quite a bit of walking. The city was built on the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, and that’s why it’s important to bring a good pair of walking shoes and avoid wearing high heels.
After that we will take a look at the oldest church in Arbanasi - the Nativity of Christ with its beautiful frescoes from 1632 and one of the oldest preserved iconostasis from wood. The mural paintings include the life of St. John the Baptist, patron of the church, and the wheel of life with the 12 zodiac signs.

The approximate time of arrival in Sofia is between 19:00 o’clock and 19:30 o’clock.
